Hoptel Units
The Brooklyn Campus provides free temporary lodging to eligible veterans receiving VHA health care services. Temporary lodging will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis and on the availability of temporary lodging beds. In order to receive temporary lodging and/or Hoptel services, a veteran must be required to travel either 50 or more miles or at least two hours from their home to the VA health care facility. The VA health care facility Director may make an exception to distance or time provisions based on exceptional circumstances, such as condition of the veteran, inclement weather, road conditions, or the mode of transportation used by the veteran. For example:
- during treatment, e.g. radiation therapy, when this would provide a convenient and/or economic alternative to repeated travel to the medical center
- early morning appointments requiring the patient to arrive the night before
- inclement weather
- irregular commercial transportation schedules
- other compelling reasons preventing timely departure of patients
At the time of lodging, the veteran must be clinically stable and capable of self-care or be accompanied by a caregiver able to provide the necessary care. VA does not provide nursing or other medical care for temporary lodging beds. Family members and/or caregivers may reside in temporary lodging facilities only with the veteran. If a veteran staying in Hoptel with a family member is admitted to an inpatient bed, alternative lodging arrangements must be made for the family member through a referral to a social worker. Minor children may not be accommodated in temporary lodging facilities on VA grounds.
